Advocating for inclusion and accessibility through web development

OurChallenge

United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) comprises a network of affiliates in the United States and Canada that serves over 154,000 children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. To celebrate its 75th Anniversary, UCP partnered with Barefoot PR to redesign its website and create a new, modern and accessible landing place. We focused on accessibility improvements, a content refresh and an improved website structure to better reflect their mission and connect with the communities they serve.

OurSolution

Beginning with focus groups, we gathered insights from UCP’s key audiences to learn more about how to better cater to site users. After learning the site was confusing, hard to find and inaccessible, we began our approach with clarity in the sitemap and ease of use. With accessibility as a priority, we partnered with Accessibe and thoroughly utilized their accessFlow tool, which examines websites from the code level and works with developers to remediate accessibility issues, aiming to adhere to WCAG 2.1 level AA. We also partnered with individuals who are blind and use a screen reader daily to understand how the website would be navigated using assistive technology and ensure ease of use.

In addition to polishing their internal pages and structure, we created a searchable affiliate and resource library, a clearer news and events page, and a navigable staff page to contact UCP staff. The new UCP website is an accessible, approachable and easy to navigate website that better represents the UCP brand and better connects their community to the many affiliates, resources and services they are looking for.
