Increasing Public Knowledge of Colorado’s Historic Drought

Our Challenge

Since 1966, the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District (Upper Yampa Water) has been Routt and Moffat Counties’ water steward for the Yampa River. In 2026, Colorado faced a historic drought, which brought unique challenges and Upper Yampa Water has been working proactively behind the scenes with regional partners to keep water flowing for people who live, work and visit the Yampa Valley. In August 2026, Upper Yampa Water hosted a day-long tour to provide a holistic view of how the drought is impacting different parts of the Yampa watershed.

Barefoot PR was tasked with inviting media to the tour and helping journalists learn more about Upper Yampa Water’s efforts to protect the region’s water access during this historic drought.

Our Solution

To share the vital news about the realities of the current drought, Barefoot PR helped Upper Yampa Water secure media placements with reporters across the state. We reached out to journalists who have been reporting on wildfires, low river levels and other impacts of the drought. Barefoot PR positioned Upper Yampa Water as a leader, go-to source and water champion in Northwest Colorado.
