Advocacy through Media Relations

OurChallenge

The Radio and Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) is the nation’s leading advocate of opening courtrooms at all levels to electronic media coverage. The RTDNA team works with news and courtroom leaders across the country to advocate for and develop clear and fair rules that increase transparency and allow journalists and judges to best serve the people.

After several unprecedented trials involving former President Donald Trump were scheduled to occur in state and federal courts, RTDNA wanted to showcase its role as a leading advocate for cameras in the court and demonstrate why audio and visual recordings are vital to protecting democracy on a national stage.

OurSolution

Barefoot PR worked alongside the RTDNA team – who successfully filed legal arguments in favor of audio and visual recordings – to conduct media outreach and draft an op-ed to share RTDNA’s position. Barefoot PR supported drafting an op-ed by Dan Shelley, president and CEO of RTDNA, and pitched general media availability for him to comment on issues of cameras in the court.

The media relations campaign resulted in an op-ed placed in The Hill, a national online outlet covering political news, and interviews with news outlets such as CBS 42 in Alabama and internationally with The Globe and Mail in Canada.
